What is an intimate wedding? This celebration has a low guest count, typically under 75 people. They are growing in popularity and we love to see it.
We love the idea of having an intimate wedding to celebrate your special day with those truly closest to you and your partner. With intimate weddings, there are many opportunities for unique venues, personalization and more! Keep reading for our guide.
VENUES:
With such a low guest count, creativity is key here! Many traditional venues have a minimum guest count that is likely double, so we recommend looking elsewhere. Our favourites are restaurant venues, Airbnb, art galleries, private estates, cottages, destination or unique event spaces (there are many in the city, around the GTA and beyond).Â
Scroll through some of our favourite intimate venues. Stephanie & Steve had their wedding at The Loft on King, a super trendy event space with exposed brick, Renee & Thomas had their wedding at Cluny Bistro & Boulangerie, a chic French restaurant in the Distillery District. Kaanchana & Gavin got married on the lake at their cottage.

ELOPE FIRST!
If your dream is to elope to another country with just your fiancé, but you would like to be able to celebrate with a small group, host an intimate reception! You could host a dinner at a cool event space, or just for champagne and cake when you get back- whatever you and your partner want! Our couple Stephanie & Steve eloped at the iconic Little White Chapel in Vegas and then hosted and partied with a small group in Toronto.
We love this idea because it is the best of both- elopement and a fun reception with guests.Â
GUEST LISTÂ
With a smaller guest count, it is much easier not to feel the obligation that comes with making a wedding guest list. First, choose your maximum number of guests and then make a list of who you truly want to celebrate with. You don’t have to invite your parent’s friends or third cousins that you haven’t seen in 6 years if you don’t want to!
PERSONALIZE IT
With the smaller guest counts, splurging on a smaller count of rentals, food choices, and unconventional venues are all more attainable and can make the day more special & personal to the couple! You can rent the pretty chargers and glassware because you don’t need 200, you may only need 50! The price is much more reasonable.
When working with a caterer, you can get more creative with the menu and choose food options that wouldn’t typically be served at a wedding. Have your main course be something you love rather than the traditional hall-dish.Â
With the finer details, make it reflect your personality and have fun with it. If you love games- have a giant Jenga or Plinko. Travel a lot- have postcards as table numbers. Love concerts- invest in a live band. Make the day reflect you and your fiancé.Â
DESTINATION
Intimate weddings don’t need to be in your hometown or country! A tropical, European or country destination can be the backdrop to your nuptials.Â
To ensure the validity and legality of your marriage, before departing to your destination wedding, obtain a marriage license at City Hall and have it officiated.Â
Or you can obtain a foreign marriage license in the country you marry in, however many documents are required. Here is a link to general information and documents the embassy may ask for CLICK HERE Â
VOWS
Saying personal vows in front of a few guests will be much less scary than having 300 people watching you. So make them special and unique as you say your marital vows.Â
